Steps To Be A Truck Driver With Trucking School In Oshawa

There are mainly two ways to become a truck driver: attend a school and go through the whole process with them, or apply on your own. We will refer to both options.

1. Attend trucking school in Oshawa

As we have mentioned before, in most cases, in order to be a truck driver in Oshawa, you need to obtain a commercial truck training license. You can attend a trucking school to get the necessary training. Schools with good programs will give you classroom lessons and hours of practice on the road. They also offer CDL training for HAZMAT drivers (the licenses to drive vehicles legally transporting hazardous materials).

In principle, there are two types of truck driving schools:

  • Paid CDL Training School: These are schools that are owned and operated by trucking companies. They bear the costs of the training in exchange for the fact that once the training period is over, the applicant signs a contract agreeing to work for the company in question for a specific period of time.
  • Private CDL Training School: These are independent schools run by trucking companies. In this case, those interested must pay for their training, but once the training period is over they can work with any company they want.

2. Being a truck driver in Oshawa on your own

You can also obtain a commercial truck training license on your own, that is, without having attended any training school. However, this route has the drawback that it may be difficult for you to find a job in some companies, since, due to insurance and policy issues, the vast majority usually request proof of 160-hour training in accredited schools. But it is not impossible, so if you decide to do it on your own, here are the steps:

Submit the CDL application at a licensing office in your area

The first thing you should do is file the CDL application at the nearest Department of Vehicles (DMV) office and pay the corresponding fees.

Submit medical exam

A DOT medical card is required. As we discussed earlier, you must undergo a physical exam with a Certified Medical Examiner.

Obtain the commercial learner's permit (CLP)

The CDL test is divided into two parts: a written knowledge test and a road test.

The Commercial Instruction Permit is the written test that is part of the CDL test and is what allows you to take the road test alongside a qualified CDL holder. This exam contains questions on general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles. On the official website, you can download the CDL Manual that contains what you need to know for each test.

After passing this test, you will receive the Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), you must wait a minimum of 14 days to schedule the driving test.

Pass the driving and road skills test

Keep in mind that on the day of the driving test you must bring your own vehicle. It is important that before presenting you pass the preliminary inspection. If you wish, you can hire an agency or trucking school in Oshawa that is dedicated to giving training for the driving test.

When you have successfully passed both exams, you will be able to obtain your commercial driver's license. Some states deliver the CDL the same day, while others will mail it to you.
